Bovine Colostrum Supplements: Special Concerns

If you are lactose intolerant or a vegetarian you may be concerned about taking colostrum supplements. Colostrum is not like regular milk and contains little to no traces of lactose. A majority of users do not report a problem with lactose concerns. Colostrum has been used for centuries in India by Ayurvedic physicians and as part of their vegan diet, making it safe and appropriate for vegetarians to consume. For those who are totally lactose intolerant, it is recommended they use colostrum liquid, as all the lactose is removed in this form. Colostrum liquid has a shorter shelf life and must be refrigerated, but contains all the nutrients of the other forms of colostrum

Colostrum Supplements: Are they safe?

Colostrum has no known drug interactions and is safe for use with children and even pets! Children of course will need a lower dosage then an adult would, so it is important to read the directions carefully. Colostrum is an organic supplement which will aid in healing your body while riding it of toxins. The first few days may be uncomfortable as you experience a ‘healing crisis' while your body flushes itself of the toxic waste. The uncomfortable symptoms are temporary and you will feel more energized once your body is cleansed. If you are pregnant or nursing, please check with your doctor before taking this, or any other supplement or medication.

Colostrum Supplement: Suggested Dose

Since everybody is different, it may take some time to find the optimal dose for your personal health. Experts suggested that for best results, you start out with a higher dose of colostrum supplement, and slowly work down until you reach a comfortable level where you are feeling healthy and energized. For those with symptoms, it is recommended that 2,000mg be taken twice a day. Adjustments can be made as necessary. For prevention purposes, the dose may be less, but if you listen to your body, you will be able to find the optimal dosage for your needs. Athletes may take more(best for athletes in colostrum powder form) colostrum supplements, and it is best if taken about an hour prior to working out.

Colostrum Supplement Forms

Bovine colostrum supplements can be taken a variety of ways, including liquid, powder, capsules and chewable tablets. While the generally preferred method of delivery is in a capsule, if you are uncomfortable swallowing a pill, simply mix the colostrum power with a food, such as yogurt or applesauce. Make sure to drink a full glass of water and take colostrum on an empty stomach.

Colostrum Powder

Colostrum can be taken in a variety of forms, each having their own benefit. It takes a lot of heat and pressure to make tablets, and during that process, some of the nutritional value is lost. Capsules are a pill which contain colostrum powder, and can be an ideal way to take the supplement. It is also possible to purchase colostrum powder, which can be mixed with a liquid and injested. Some research has suggested this may increase absorption of IGF1 and aid in atheletic performance.

Colostrum Liquid

Colostrum liquid is the least processed of all the supplement forms. However, it has a shorter shelf life then capsules or tablets do. Essentially, liquid colostrum is treated like milk, and must be kept refrigerated and used within a short period of time (generally 30 days or less). If this form appeals to you, make sure to follow directions for storage and use carefully.
